Fixing the System (1999)

dry bones

July 30, 1999
Dry Bones, cartoon, golden oldie
Israel ís now in the middle of another Knesset campaign. Every campaign is accompanied by suggestions about how to "fix"our electoral system. Today's cartoon is from 1999, the last year of the last century, when we actually tried a new system. We then became unsatisfied with the "fix" and went back to where we are today, i.e. comfortably complaining about the system and figuring out which party to vote for.

I believe that the only way to change the system is from within.
And that can only be done if the biggest party has around 50 seats (irrespective of political leaning) (the absolute best would be 61 - but I live on the coast when there is sufficient oxygen to run the common sense area of my brain) and can then pick and choose an appropriate coalition partner in a buyer's market situation.

The next step would be to raise the threshold to 5 seats

Within a few election cycles, the number of parties competing in the elections will drop to around 10 or less (as opposed to 40 in the current elections).

The only drawback that I can see is: Give any party that kind of absolute power, and absolute corruption is likely to ensue.

Looking back over the past 60 years, it appears that the political elections system has not impacted greatly on the progress achieved in the country, so maybe the best solution is to leave the system as it is and live with it / ignore it between elections - which, in a country of around seven million prime ministers, ain't likely to be the case!

I learned about the electrol college and don't like it. Now I am trying to understand parlimentary government. But these elections have me totally confused. How do you vote here? Any sample ballots so one can learn a little?
Help

B"H - This whole vote-mania is a deception, a goyshe system over-imposed on the Jews. Jews should not vote, we voted for Hashem, to our G-d, under the Mount in Sinai. Plus political part-ies are illegal under Jewish Law as we don't supposed to divide the nation. In conclusion, democracy may be good for the nations, but for the Jews in Insrael it is a disaster per definition.

THERE IS NO "GOOD" SYSTEM. Every system has it's flaws. Sorry.
But any system that runs peacefully and doesn't result in civil war (see Syria) is basically good enough for me.
So, it does not really matter HOW you elect or even if you do or not. It just matters that you can change leaders without war. I think.
