Tokyo Rose Dies

Dry Bones cartoon -Tokyo Rose dies
In the last World War the demoralizing effect of "advocacy" journalism was harnessed by the enemy... Of course then it was called propaganda.

The two media "stars" of this period were Axis Sally and Tokyo Rose. Both were Americans. The woman known as Tokyo Rose died this week.

For the story of both (and Lord Haw Haw, the British Nazi broadcaster) click on the photo of the two ladies below:

Democracy in the Middle East (1992)

1992 Dry Bones cartoon -Immigrants prepare to vote
The bottom of this cartoon is not torn. The ragged edge at the bottom was an attempt to be creative, which obviously went astray.

In these full page cartoons, I used the device of a Doobie the Dog strip to cut the usually sugary viewpoint of Mr. Shuldig.

But this cartoon from back in '92 makes me feel sad as I reread it in 2006. Are we truly doomed to live as a lone democracy in a sea of oppressive regimes that do not tolerate minorities or allow for freedom of religion? Or equality for women?

To be forever surrounded by enslaved people whose frustrations and anger are channeled into rage at Western civilization?
...And at us?

Nu? So at this time between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, I wonder...
What's going to be our future, and theirs,
And yours?

May you be inscribed in the Book of Life.
Happy New Year.

Clinton's Global Initiative

Dry Bones cartoon -Clinton is at it again, searching for 'Peace' in the Middle East
Al-Jazeerah Reports
"New York, 22 September 2006: The International Crisis Group today launched a new global advocacy initiative designed to generate new political momentum for a comprehensive settlement of the Arab-Israeli conflict. Major funding support for the initiative, to cost around $400,000 in its first year, was announced at the Clinton Global Initiative meeting in New York."

The basic goal of the initiative is to empower the Arab States and a broad alliance of anti-Israeli leaders to campaign internationally to force a "solution" on Israel.
As the official report puts it:

"An international publicity campaign mobilising respected former presidents, prime ministers, foreign and defence ministers, congressional leaders and heads of international organisations around a statement of support for a comprehensive settlement, and a new process to achieve it, involving a possible international conference to kickstart negotiations, and the leadership role of the Quartet (U.S., EU, Russia, UN) being reinforced by greater participation from the Arab League and regional countries."

Clinton's Human Rights Record (1997)

1997 Dry Bones cartoon -Clinton, after the massacre at tienneman square, granted China most favored nation status... so why should the PLO's excesses bother him?

1989. The Chinese Massacre of Civilians in Tienneman Square.

"The images are shocking. Armoured tanks plow into crowds of people, flames from burning buses light up the night sky, and bleeding bodies are rushed to hospital."

1992. Campaigning for the Presidency, Clinton charged that Bush was willing to "coddle tyrants" in Beijing. Clinton implied he would use trade threats as a club to force the Chinese to behave on human rights

Bin Laden Sick?

Dry Bones cartoon -Rumors that Bin Laden is dead. The Saudis say he drank contaminated water and is sick.

Rumors that Bin Laden is dead. The Saudis say he drank contaminated water and is sick.
And I've decided to play with a new "duet". Two UN guys.
One an African and the other a Latin American.

I think of them as post-Christian, anti-American, Bush-hating, Jihadi appeasers. . . You know, just a couple of regular guys from what we used to call the third world.
It was fun to imagine what their reaction to the Saudi story might be.

So how was YOUR Rosh HaShana?

Shana Tova - Have a Good Year.

Dry Bones cartoon -Each year we dip apples into honey and hope for a sweet new year. Shana Tova! Happy Jewish New Year!
The Jewish New Year begins at sundown tonight, Friday September 22.
The Jewish year is 5767.
...(Counting the years since the creation of Adam and Eve).
The proper greeting is Shana Tova
Emphasis on the final syllables. Shana means year, Tova is Hebrew for good.

May we all have a Shana Tova!

The Jewish New Year (1992)

1992 Dry Bones cartoon -comparing the Jewish New Year with New Year's Day

The Jewish New Year begins (this year) at sundown on September 22.
Back in 1992 I decided to explain the similarities and differences between the Jewish New Year and January 1, New Year's Day.

Disrespecting Islam

Dry Bones cartoon -The Pope, the Mafia, and the violent reaction of Muslim mobs!
Violent and hyper-sensitive reactions to supposed attacks on their "honor" is a characteristic of street gangs everywhere. The following is about American street gangs and is from the Police and Security News July/August 2000:
"In the gang world, no challenge, assault or diss (act of disrespect) can go unanswered since being a gang member is all about holding onto respect and reputation (rep). When a diss occurs to a gang by a rival, only revenge will satisfy the offended gang. To them, revenge shows the world (mostly themselves, really), that their rep is intact and is to be respected. Gang history teaches us that revenge will be in the form of a bloody beating, a bullet-spray drive-by or even a bombing." -complete article

So does this "gang mentality" explain the spread of Moslem anger?
...and perhaps the spread of Islam itself?

The Pope and the Terrorists (1982)

1982 Dry Bones cartoon -the Pope is to meet with the Terrorist Chieftain Arafat.

Given the orchestrated explosion of Islamic anger at the current Pope, I thought I'd drag out this Golden Oldie from way back on September 13, 1982.

Two days later, Pope John Paul II met with terrorist chieftain Arafat.

Arafat called the papal encounter "very warm, very important, a historic meeting." Then-Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin said: "What else can one say, except to express disgust?" -more

The Pope and the Muslims

Dry Bones cartoon -Pushing the Pope!
Somehow we've moved up a notch.
Closer to a "real" religious war than ever before.
By "real" I mean that both sides know that there is a war going on.
Judging by the argument I had at a reception I attended this evening, lots of us seem to be frozen in the "headlights", unable to accept the fact that we are, indeed, in a planet-wide religious war.

As a kid in the American school system, I was taught that the Germans were "good people" and that the problem of Nazism was all due to a lone fiendish madman named /Hitler.

Then, in the sixties, just 20 years after WW2, America treated the world to funny, fumbling, Nazis in that travesty called "Hogan's Heroes". Set in a Nazi prison camp, the Allied prisoners have a great time at the expense of the silly Nazi prison guards.

So if by some strange twist of fate we win this war, do you think that we'll eventually see some funny, fumbling Islamofascist TV sitcom?
Set in a funny Islamist prison camp with happy Westerners and dopey terrorists? A great running gag could be a frustrated terrorist who, after he's tricked again by an American captive, says "ooooh, I'm gonna' cut your head clean off!"

Kofi's Trip

Dry Bones cartoon - Our Western Media has betrayed us!
As reported by "Omar at Iraq the Model":
After finishing his tour in the Middle East, Kofi Annan says most region leaders told him the invasion of Iraq and its aftermath have been a disaster.
A disaster for whom, is the question…
-more

When I did this cartoon I titled it Kofi's Trip.
As in an LSD "trip".
A subtle joke.
Maybe too subtle.
Did anybody "get it"?

Jimmy Carter's Peace Plan (1977)

1977 Dry Bones cartoon -Jimmy Carter, a very trusting guy

I drew this cartoon 29 years ago, and I still can't understand the peanut farmer.

So help me out. Time for a mini-poll.
What's your opinion?

Was Carter:
1. Being incredibly innocent.
2. Being paid off.
3. Being Anti-Semitic
4. Wearing his PC blinders.
5. Other (please explain)

Media Monkeys on our Backs

Dry Bones cartoon - Our Western Media has betrayed us!
This posting is almost a day late.
The reason is that I've spent the day at the sixth annual International Conference on Global Terrorism... And frankly, I'm ANGRY.
I've been overloaded with facts and details, lectures, maps, and panel discussions which showed me just how much I DIDN'T know about the Radical Islamic war against Israel, the Jews, and Western Civilization.

The Western Media from CBS and the BBC to the NY Times have all kept us from the truth about the situation!!
I was so angry that I scribbled out this see no evil, hear no evil cartoon, and when I got back to my studio I did the "finish" and then this posting.
If I can be allowed to express my anger in cartoon talk, permit me to say @#$%?!!!?

Fight for Peace (1991)

1991 Dry Bones cartoon -You can't just want peace, sometimes you have to fight for it.

This cartoon from 1991 stated a simple truth. I did it because of my frustration with people who just didn't "get it".

Now, five years after the 911 attack on America, statistics are being published that claim to show that about one third of Americans believe that the American government itself ordered the attack on the towers!!!

"More than a third of the American public suspects that federal officials assisted in the 9/11 terrorist attacks or took no action to stop them so the United States could go to war in the Middle East, according to a new Scripps Howard/Ohio University poll."

Five Years Later

Dry Bones cartoon - Sep 11... five years later!
Five years after Sep. 11 and it seems like most Americans (and for sure most Europeans) still do not believe that they are under attack by an international Fascist movement based on Islam. I wrestled with this shocking reality and thought about how to show the public being deceived, blinded, and mislead.

I decided to use a tired old political cartoonist trick... representing the long-suffering public through the use of a "John Q. Public" character.

Below is a typical Bill Sanders John Q. Public cartoon from March 11, 1969, and below it a John Q. Public cartoon from a generation before.

Note that in both the 'toons, John Q. has a funny little pork pie hat.

Know Thine Enemy

Dry Bones cartoon - 6th Annual Conference on Global Terror!
It's True!
We are plotting against them!
And it's happening right here in the little Israeli town in which I live.
Yup.

The Institute for Counter-Terrorism at IDC in the city of Herzliya is holding its sixth annual International Conference on Global Terrorism.

The conference will open on Monday evening, September 11th, with a memorial ceremony for the September 11 terror victims and for victims of terrorism worldwide.

Taking part in this conspiracy to stop terrorism will be counter-terrorism experts, researchers, activists, security professionals, leading academic scholars from around the world, and at least one political cartoonist.

God is Politically Incorrect (1994)

1994 Dry Bones cartoon -Is God Dead or just Politically Incorrect?

Yesterday's cartoon was about the fix that we've gotten into with Political Correctness messing up our thinking. Today's Golden Oldie examined the situation back in 1994

Time Mag. April 8 1966 It's hard to believe, but back in the 20th Century, the idea of God no longer being relevant was seriously debated. Here in the 21st Century, of course, belief in God has made an astounding impact on our lives. The Time Mag cover is from April 8, 1966

Their PC Plan

Dry Bones cartoon - Suppress women, stuff 'em into walking body bags, deny their humanity, turn 'em into chattel, beat the crap outa' them, and if we call it a third world 'people of color' religion, Western liberals will keep their mouths shut!
Political Correctness means that you can't suspect someone because he's acting suspicious. Oops! I should've said "because he or she is acting suspicious."

Affirmative action and color discrimination mean exactly the same thing, but one is good and the other is bad.
Right?

The present state of PC insanity has Feminists ignoring the horror of genital mutilation and turning a blind eye to the suppression of women in Islamic societies.

Current levels of PC poisoning has the majority of American Jews opposing Israel's greatest friends and allies in America because they are (gulp) Christians or (gasp) Republicans.

The problem is that we no longer have the luxury of playing "let's pretend".
Not if we intend to survive.

Predictions (1991)

1991 Dry Bones cartoon -Ecology in the 21st Century

It was May, 1991. The year 2000 was nine years in the future.
I had a slurp from what we (back in the 20th Century) called " a bottle of mineral water."

Here, 15 years into the future (in the 21st Century) we've dropped the word mineral. We've accepted the idea that we pay for a bottle of water!
I was old enough back in 1991 to think that paying for a bottle of water was absurd!

But one of the things cartoonists are supposed to do is to see and show a picture of the way things are going. So I grabbed my pen, scribbled the title "Life in the 21st Century" and under that I drew Mr. Shuldig looking at his empty plastic water bottle. I looked at my sketch and the empty bottle and I thought "In the future they'll sell us bottled air!!" The idea was then to show how we can adjust to living with the growing ecological disaster.

From there on I just let myself go.
And this full color page in the Jerusalem Report was the result.

I tried to squeeze it into the blog space.
I hope it works.

Bush Name-Calling

Dry Bones cartoon - Bush called them Fascists!
What's in a name?
First they were "Fundamentalists", then "Extremists".
Some of us started calling them Wahabis.
Or Jihadis,
Then Islamists.
After that "Islamofascist" came into vogue.

Political Correctness is forcing us to twist the language to avoid saying the obvious fact that the movement that now seeks to conquer and control the planet is... Islam. There! I said it.

It seems simple to me.
But hey, I'm only a cartoonist.

Kofi Shrugs

Dry Bones cartoon - Iran defies UN deadline. Kofi Annan shrugs!
Just a casual poll.
Is this guy:
1. Dumb?
2. Evil?
3. Being paid off?
or
4. Truly representative of the majority of the UN's member states?

Nu?
So whaddya' think?
